Instrument Pilot Requirements

 

1. Hold at least a current Private Pilot certificate with an aircraft rating appropriate to the     instrument rating sought.
2. Be able to read, speak, and understand the English Language.
3. Hold a valid third-class medical certificate.
4. Pass a written test on various subject areas of aeronautical knowledge within the preceding 24     months.
5. Pass an oral and flight test on maneuvers and procedures selected by an FAA inspector or     designated pilot examiner.

Instrument Pilot Aeronautical Experience
(Airplane Rating)


The applicant must have logged the following:

1. At least 50 hours of cross - country flight time as Pilot - in - command of which at least 10     hours must be in airplane of an instrumental airplane rating.
2. A total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instructional time to include the following:
    a. At least 15 hours of instrumental flight training from an authorized instructor in the aircraft         category of which the instrument rating is sought.
    b. At least 3 hours of instrument training from an authorized instructor in preparation for the         practical test within 60 days preceding the test.
    c.Instrumental rating on cross - country flight procedures including at least one cross - country        flight in an airplane that is preformed under IFR and consists of a distance of at least 250        NM along airways or ATC - directed routing, an     instrument approach at each airport, and        3 different kinds of approach with use of navigation systems.
3. Control and accurate maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to instruments.
4. IFR navigation by use of different types of navigation systems, including compliance with air     traffic control instructions and procedures.
5. Use IFR on route and instrument approach procedure charts.
6. Simulated emergencies, including recovery from unusual attitudes, equipment or instrument     malfunctions, loss of communications, and missed approach procedures.
7. A maximum of 20 hours may be preformed in an approved flight simulator or flight training     device or 10 hours in an approved PC flight simulator.
